Background of the study
Sand dredging is increasingly recognized as a significant environmental and socio-economic issue in coastal regions. In Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, this activity disrupts natural coastal processes, leading to erosion, loss of habitats, and adverse effects on local communities. The extraction of sand for construction purposes, often conducted without adequate regulation, has been linked to environmental degradation and the disruption of local livelihoods (Oluwaseun, 2023). Coastal communities in the area depend on stable shorelines for fishing, tourism, and other economic activities, and excessive dredging has led to the loss of protective natural barriers (Fashola, 2024). Recent field studies indicate that the environmental impacts extend to altering marine ecosystems, reducing biodiversity, and increasing vulnerability to storm surges (Akinyemi, 2025). Furthermore, the socio-economic implications include reduced property values, loss of income, and increased costs for coastal protection measures. In light of these challenges, it is imperative to evaluate the overall impact of sand dredging activities on both the environment and community livelihoods, aiming to identify sustainable management practices that can mitigate these negative outcomes (Babatunde, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Sand dredging in Ibeju-Lekki has led to significant coastal erosion, habitat destruction, and economic instability among local communities. Unregulated extraction activities are eroding the natural shoreline, impacting fishing and tourism sectors. The resultant environmental degradation has not been matched by effective governmental regulation or sustainable alternatives. Consequently, affected communities experience a decline in property values and heightened vulnerability to natural disasters (Adebayo, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  • To determine the environmental effects of sand dredging on coastal erosion.
  • To assess the socio-economic impacts on local communities.
  • To recommend sustainable dredging and coastal management practices.

Research questions

  • How does sand dredging influence coastal erosion in Ibeju-Lekki?
  • What are the socio-economic consequences of these activities on local communities?
  • What sustainable practices can be implemented to manage sand dredging?

Research Hypotheses

  • H1: Sand dredging significantly accelerates coastal erosion.
  • H2: The socio-economic well-being of coastal communities is negatively affected by unregulated dredging.
  • H3: Implementing sustainable practices can mitigate the adverse impacts of sand dredging.

Significance of the study
This research provides critical insights into the environmental and socio-economic impacts of sand dredging, informing policy interventions and sustainable coastal management. The findings aim to support community resilience and long-term environmental protection in coastal areas.

Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to the impact of sand dredging on coastal communities in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, Lagos State.

Definitions of terms

  • Sand dredging: The process of extracting sand from the seabed for industrial or construction purposes.
  • Coastal erosion: The gradual loss of coastal land due to natural processes and human activities.
  • Sustainable practices: Methods that meet current needs without compromising future environmental integrity.
